Lake of the Woods Tourism Bureau Executive Director Joe Henry catches a 3-pound, 14-ounce, smallie. He and Gold Team Captain Mark Fisher, a longtime Rapala pro and bait developer, are really whacking the smallmouth – or SMBs, as Fisher calls ‘em.
“We must have caught several almost as good as that one,” Fisher says. “We caught 15 in this one spot. We’ll give you the GPS waypoints, it’s nuts!”
Pointing off into three directions, Fisher recalls the last hour’s flurry of activity. “There’s fish there, there, and behind us,” he says. “And we’re not done yet! Joe and I are having a heck of time!”
They are casting to a breezy shoreline near a small point, targeting emergent vegetation and chunk-rock transitions in about six feet of 61 degree water. Scatter Shads in Golden Albernus are the hot baits here.
